Heart rate monitoring function in MIUI Health app uses phone camera and LED flash
Techno section editor
Last year Xiaomi introduced a new MIUI system app called MIUI Health. This app offers a number of features such as step tracking with running, cycling and climbing stairs, sleep monitoring, and menstrual cycle tracking. Now, with version 2.7.4, the app gets a new heart rate monitoring feature that is tracked in the most unexpected way.
Until a few years ago, Samsung supplied heart rate sensors to its flagship smartphones. But with the advent of fitness trackers and smartwatches on the market, the company stopped adding them. Another reason why they are abandoned is to save space for some other components and to reduce the cost of the apparatus.
The smartphone will measure the heartbeat by illuminating the skin with a flash and analyzing the camera
Xiaomi has implemented heart rate monitoring in its MIUI Health app without relying on a dedicated sensor. The app uses a phone camera and LED flash to measure your heart rate. This is reported by GizmoChina.

The user needs to close the camera sensor and flash with his finger and wait until the bar on the screen is full. Then you need to select your current state in the application: “Normal”, “Resting” and “After training”. However, experts doubt that heart rate measurements through the LED and camera will be accurate.
As with the Mi Fit app, users will have access to a dashboard displaying the history of their heart rate measurements. The MIUI Health app was originally limited to the Chinese version of MIUI 12. But it is now available in other regional software builds as well.
