Azarenka – Mertens: will Vicky’s winning streak continue?
The Belarusian tennis player has a series of nine victories. Will Victoria Azarenka extend her winning streak against Eliza Mertens on September 10 at the US Open? Let’s get acquainted with our forecast.
The last time Victoria Azarenka played in the US Open quarterfinals was back in 2015. Then the Belarusian tennis player could not cope with Simona Halep (3-6, 6-4, 3-6). This time, the former first racket of the world came to the quarter-finals in excellent shape and clearly intends to continue the tournament path.
Victoria Azarenka reached the fourth round in New York without losing sets. And we cannot call its tournament grid too easy. So, in the second round, I had to play against compatriot Arina Sobolenko (6-1, 6-3), and in the third round, the rivals were the promising representative of Poland Iga Swiontek (6-4, 6-2).
The greatest difficulties, as we wrote in our forecast, faced Victoria in the 1/8 finals. It took a long time to find my serve and adapt to the manner of play by left-handed Karoilna Mukhova. However, in the end, experience and the ability to rebuild during the match helped (5-7, 6-1, 6-4).
As the tournament progresses, Victoria Azarenka is already making cautious predictions about her possible triumph in New York. Although, as usual, Vika is cautious in her statements and criticizes some points of her game.
Eliza Mertens actively joined the tour after the resumption of the season. Even before the start at the US Open, the Belgian tennis player played in the final of the clay tournament in Prague, reached the semifinals on the hard in New York.
In many ways, the current success of Mertens and her entry into the quarterfinals (the second season in a row) is logical. In the first three rounds, Eliza quite confidently, without losing sets, justified the status of a favorite in fights against Siegemund (6-2, 6-2), Sorribes (6-3, 7-5), McNally (7-5, 6-1). This is not to say that everything was very simple for the Belgian tennis player. The same McNally had good chances for a set, but played too uncertain on the decisive balls.
In the 1/8 finals, Eliza was awaited by the winner of the Australian Open 2020, Sofia Kenin. Here, Mertens was already the underdog of the bookmakers , however, she had an impeccable match and was more reliable than Sofia in all game parameters (6-3, 6-3).
Azarenka and Mertens will play each other for the first time
The Belarusian tennis player currently has a winning streak of nine matches
During the tournament, Mertens did not give a single set to her rivals
09/08/19 Victoria Azarenko Eliza Mertens 0: 2
03/29/19 Victoria Azarenko Eliza Mertens 0: 2
According to bookmaker analysts, there is no clear favorite in the match. Indeed, both tennis players approached the upcoming match in excellent game form. Much will be decided in terms of psychology and tactical moves. In this respect, Azarenka has a definite advantage .
Vika knows how to adapt to rivals with different styles of play, which was clearly noticeable in her game with Mukhova. We will also note the game at the reception of the Belarusian tennis player. Mertens won’t have a lot of light games on his serve. We offer a forecast for Victoria’s next victory.
Our prediction is Azarenka’s victory for 1.80 odds in BC Vinline .
