History of the origin of the holiday:

It all started with the dispersal by the police and SS units of a peaceful demonstration on the occasion of the 21st anniversary of the creation of the Czechoslovak Republic. During this, medical student Jan Opletal was seriously injured and later died. His funeral turned into a protest against the occupation, in which thousands of people participated. The next day, a decision was made to close Czech higher education institutions “for three years”.

On November 17, mass arrests of Czech students took place in Prague and other university cities. 9 leading representatives of student organizations were executed in Prague prison walls, more than 1,200 were arrested and sent to Sachsenhausen the next day. Soldiers broke into the dormitories, beat the students, then took them to the outskirts of Prague, where the violence continued, the students were forced to fall, and the Germans stepped on their necks with their boots.

Please note that Student Day is also celebrated on another day the date The International Council of Students at a meeting in London in 1941 adopted a statement in which November 17 was declared International Students' Day in memory of the events in the Czech Republic. Since then, international students have been promoting the idea of recognizing November 17 as International Students' Day at the UN level.
