A bug has been discovered in the Windows 11 24H2 update that can cause colors to display incorrectly in games. As some users report, the problem is not limited to games. Windows 11 can also display desktop colors incorrectly if the «Automatic application color management» option is enabled in the operating system settings.
Microsoft has also acknowledged the issue with Auto HDR. The latter is designed to improve the quality of color display in games by automatically converting SDR content, that is, with the standard dynamic range of brightness, which is used by default, to HDR content with an extended dynamic range of brightness.
As noted, using Auto HDR not only leads to incorrect color display, but also causes crashes in some programs:
«After installing Windows 11 version 24H2, you may experience problems with games if the Auto HDR feature is enabled on your device. You may also notice that some games stop responding», – Microsoft notes.
The company has paused the release of Windows 11 24H2 updates for systems that have Auto HDR enabled. For such systems, Windows Update will not offer to install Windows 11 24H2. If the Windows 11 24H2 update is already installed, you can disable the Auto HDR feature by opening «Settings → System → Graphics → Auto HDR». The feature can be disabled both for the entire system and for individual applications.
Microsoft said in a conversation with the Windows Latest portal that it is already working on a fix that will be released in the near future.
