The Recall feature in Windows 11 can store confidential user information. This was noted by the authors of the Tom’s Hardware publication.
Recall is an artificial intelligence (AI)-based feature that constantly records the computer’s screen so that the user can access these recordings at any time. Journalist Avram Piltch exposed Recall as being able to copy credit card data, even though Windows settings prohibit it.
Piltch tried entering his bank card number on a number of sites, as well as his social security number — a unique identifier assigned to US citizens and residents. He then requested Recall's screen recordings and found that in some cases the OS had saved this information. At the same time, the “Privacy Filtering” setting was enabled, which prevents Recall from storing private data.
The journalist noted that in some cases Windows still ignores his banking data: for example, at the stage of purchase in one of the stores, card information and social security number were hidden. Avram Piltch contacted Microsoft, and the company replied that errors are possible, but engineers continue to improve the function.
In early December, it became known that Microsoft was unable to launch the Recall function in Windows 11 without a crash. Some users noticed that Recall was unable to correctly save screenshots and screen recordings.
