“Working in the GoT universe has been an honor and a privilege over the last few years, especially having spent the last two with the amazing cast and crew of House of the Dragon. I am very proud of what we have achieved with Season 1 and delighted with the enthusiastic response from our viewers,” said Sapochnik.

“It was incredibly difficult to make the decision to move on, but I know it's the right choice for me personally and professionally. However, I was deeply comforted to hear that Alan would be joining the series. I have known and respected him for a long time and I believe this precious series could not be in better hands,” he added. “I am thrilled to continue to be a part of the HBO and House of the Dragon family and of course I wish Ryan and his team all the best for the second season and beyond.”

As Sapochnik made clear, House of the Dragon co-creator Ryan Condal, who co-created with Sapochnik in season 1, will now be the sole showrunner. Condal will continue to work closely with series co-creator George R.R. Martin and the rest of the production team. Sarah Hess and Jocelyn Diaz will also continue to serve as executive producers alongside Vince Gerardis.

Game of Thrones veteran Alan Taylor will also join as director and executive producer of the series' second season, which has been renewed several days after successful launch.

Taylor said: “It's a pleasure and an honor to be back on HBO, immersing myself in the world of the Targaryens. I look forward to working closely with Ryan as House of the Dragon grows into its second season. Ryan, Miguel and George start an extraordinary story in a rich and fascinating world. Returning to Westeros will be a huge undertaking and I look forward to the challenge.”
