Who will receive the title of “Person of the Year 2024”: Time named 10 contenders

Influential American magazine Time published a shortlist of candidates for the title of “Person of the Year 2024”. The list includes 10 prominent personalities who, in the opinion of the editors, had the greatest influence on world events during the year. Who are these people  found out  Today edition.

Who will be the “Man of the Year 2024” – a complete list of nominees

  • Donald Trump – the newly elected US president who made a historic return to the White House, defeating Kamala Harris in the election. He became the first president since Grover Cleveland to return to power after losing in the previous election.
  • Kamala Harris – Trump's Democratic rival who entered the race after Joe Biden unexpectedly decided not to run for a second term. Her fight for the presidency began less than three months before the election.
  • Kate Middleton – the Princess of Wales has faced serious challenges this year. In March, she announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer. The announcement came after a wave of rumors and conspiracy theories about her health, which arose during her absence from public events following abdominal surgery. In September, the princess announced that she had completed chemotherapy and returned to her duties.
  • Elon Musk – the richest person in the world, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. Became an active supporter of Trump, spending more than $250 million on his campaign. Appointed together with Vivek Ramaswamy head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Plans to cut federal spending by $2 trillion. by reducing civil servants.
  • Yulia Navalny – the widow of a Russian opposition figure, who now lives abroad. Became a “symbol of resistance to the Putin regime” after her husband died in prison in February. Accused Putin of murder, promised to continue anti-corruption activities. In October, she helped publish Navalny's posthumous memoirs.
  • Benjamin Netanyahu – Israeli prime minister, controversial figure due to war in Gaza and Lebanon. According to Gaza, 44,000 Palestinians have been killed since the attack on October 7, 2023, when Hamas killed 1,200 Israelis and took 250 hostages. On November 26, the government approved a ceasefire with Hezbollah. In November, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu for possible war crimes.
  • Jerome Powell – Fed chairman, working on a “soft landing” of the economy from inflation. He has been the target of criticism from Trump, who appointed him in 2017. He said in November that he would not resign at Trump's request before the end of his term in 2026.
  • Joe Rogan – the most popular podcaster in the US, who conducted a high-profile interview with Trump in October. Tens of millions listened to the conversation, demonstrating the influence of non-traditional media. Harris declined the invitation to the podcast.
  • Claudia Sheinbaum – the first female president of Mexico and the first of Jewish descent, took office in October. The former mayor of Mexico City entered into a dispute with Trump over his threats to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican goods. Claims that crime in Mexico exists because of demand in the US.
  • Mark Zuckerberg – Meta CEO, started the year with a Senate hearing on child online safety, ended it by recording an acoustic version of “Get Low” with T-Pain. The world's second-richest person accused the Biden administration of pressuring Facebook to remove content about COVID-19.
