Which countries are the largest producers of wind energy?

During the full-scale war, Ukraine lost more than half of its electricity generation due to the occupation of territories and air attacks. In addition to traditional sources, «green» energy also suffered – up to 40% of solar and about 80-90% of wind energy were lost. Most wind farms are located in the south of the country, where climatic conditions are favorable for this, so they ended up under occupation. Nevertheless, this type of renewable energy is planned to be developed: the Ministry of Energy stated that its potential in Ukraine is estimated at 140 GW. Its advantage is that it is cheaper than «traditional», safer, more environmentally friendly, and the stations can operate effectively all year round.

«Word and Deed» It was found out which countries of the world have relied on wind energy and are leaders in its production.

China currently holds the first place in the world in terms of installed wind power capacity – 441.9 thousand megawatts. The country accounts for 43.4% of the world's wind power capacity, as well as 84.8% of the capacity in the Asia-Pacific region.

On average, between 2013 and 2023, wind power capacity in China grew by 19.1% per year.

By the way, in parallel, China is actively developing solar energy: in 2023, its capacity increased more than in the previous three years. In general, solar and wind energy accounted for 37% of China's total generation as of last year.

The second place in the world in terms of wind energy capacity is the USA – about 148 thousand megawatts. The country's share in world power – 14.6%, in the region (North America) – 85.9%.

As reported by the Energy Information Administration, this year wind farms provided a record share of electricity generation in the US and are the second largest source of clean energy.

The capacity of wind stations in Germany is estimated at 69.5 thousand megawatts. The share of the country in the world – 6.8%, and in Europe – 25.8%. On average, the wind energy capacity grew by 7.6% over the year.

In India, the power of wind turbines is about 44.7 thousand megawatts: the share in the world – 4.4%, in the Asia-Pacific region – 8.6%.

Spain closes the top five countries in terms of wind turbine power – slightly more than 31 thousand megawatts: share in the world – 3.1%, in Europe – 11.5%.

Finland (on average by 31.6% every year) and Brazil (29.5%) are the record holders for the rate of expansion of wind power capacity.
