A study entitled “Born Social 2024”, conducted by the agency Heaven, in collaboration with the association Génération Numérique, reveals that 75% of under-13s use at least one social network regularly, while having a critical eye on their parents' use of it. It also tells us that WhatsApp is seeing its popularity skyrocket among young people.
One of the notable results of this study is the increase in popularity of WhatsApp, traditionally popular with adults. This messaging service is now attracting younger people, particularly attracted by its recent features such as sharing statuses and temporary photos, as well as the news system. HugoDécrypte, at the forefront, relies heavily on this network to captivate its young audience.
Although its revamped interface is popular, WhatsApp raises major concerns about privacy and surveillance. Parents, among others, use the application to track their teenagers with GPS tracking. No less than 60% of the young people surveyed complained about this.
Moreover, they are increasingly critical of their parents' use of social networks. As reported by Siècle Digital, 28% of young people believe that their elders spend too much time on their phones, a significant increase compared to last year. This role reversal highlights mutual concerns about digital technology, thus calling for a reassessment of consumption models, but also and above all of the balance to be found between security, freedom, and family life.
In short, the study encourages critical reflection on the relationship between young people and their parents and technology, both in terms of use and family responsibilities.
