After the huge success of House of the Dragon, HBO has just taken a heavy hit. ;decision on one of its most ambitious series: Westworld.
A sad decision
Created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the series Westworld is without a doubt one of HBO’s most ambitious series. And that's saying something, when you consider the impressive number of masterpieces broadcast by the mythical chain of the Warner group: The Sopranos,  ;The Wire, Game of Thrones, Band of Brothers, Deadwood, Boardwalk Empire, etc. It must be said that the quality Westworld is matched only by the intensity of the interpretation of its actors and actresses.
However, if the first season had been unanimously acclaimed, the following three seasons did not have the same success. Indeed, although a band of die-hard fans (of which the author of these lines is a proud part) appreciated the directions taken by Westworld, it would seem however that the scriptwriting biases of the showrunners (in particular the desire to weave a scenario that is still just as cryptic) finally ended up tiring part of the public .
Over the seasons, the series has seen its audiences drop drastically:the first season brought together an average of 1.82 million Americans watching their television; the fourth season brought together an average of barely 0.35 million. On the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, we also notice a decrease in the appreciation of the series over the seasons:the first season had recorded a satisfaction rate of 87%, while the fourth was capped at 76% (which is still an excellent mark, by the way). shortly after the broadcast of the fourth season, HBO made a difficult decision: to cancel Westworld, which will therefore not have the fifth season desired by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, as revealed by The Hollywood Reporter. A decision all the more disappointing, as last month, the brother of Christopher Nolan reiterated his will. to bring fans a fifth season of Westworld.
If fans expected this decision, given the absence of an announcement of renewal which was (rightly) a very bad sign, remember however that the cancellation was not obvious : HBO very rarely cancels its series. We remember The Wire, the masterpiece of David Simon, who was entitled to; five seasons, despite a relatively small audience. But the season 4 finale can be considered as an open end.
À note that despite the cancellation of Westworld, the actors of the show will be paid for season 5. Indeed, Deadline tells us that Rachel Evan Wood, Thandie Newton, Ed Harris and their colleagues signed a “Pay or Play Deal” with HBO, which guarantees them to be paid even if season 5 does not take place. It's this kind of deal that allowed & # 39; Johnny Depp to be paid for Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore's Secretswhile he was not present in the film.
Looking ahead, the two Westworld showrunners, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, are on several projects. They produced this recent sci-fi series for Prime Video, which knockedThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power from the top of the platform's trends. We are also eagerly awaiting the release of their Fallout series for Prime Video, which recently premiered. been unveiled.
