West Virginia set two new records last week for daily COVID-19 cases, as Republican Gov. Jim Justice warned that the state remains “overwhelmingly inundated” with hospitalized patients.
On Saturday, West Virginia recorded 1,821 new cases of coronavirus, reaching an all-time high for daily infections. That count surpassed a record set just three days earlier, when the state recorded 1,738 new cases, the Associated Press reported. Prior to both days, the highest number of daily positive cases in West Virginia was just over 1,700 on Dec. 31.
As of Saturday, the West Virginia health department recorded a total of 7,849 new cases in the past six days, which has already surpassed the seven-day total from the previous week. Statewide, the number of active coronavirus cases has risen. more than doubled in the past three weeks, rising to 22,000, according to AP.
Earlier this week, the courts said state hospitals continue to be “overwhelmingly flooded” with new COVID patients. Friday, the governor’s office said coronavirus hospitalizations equaled a historic record during the pandemic, with 818 people being received medical care, of which 252 patients are in the ICU and a record 152 are on ventilators.
“When we started down this road with the Delta variant, I came to you and told you that we really needed to buckle up,” Justice said during a news conference Friday. “Well, it surely has.”
West Virginia coronavirus czar Dr. Clay Marsh said that 90 percent of ICU patients and 91 to 93 percent of those who use ventilators are not vaccinated. In total, 85 percent of all hospitalized COVID-19 patients have not received the injection.
“We have reached that level of hospital bed capacity, occupied by people infected with COVID-19, approximately 100 days faster than during our last increase in December 2020,” Dr. Marsh said during a press conference.
“We can see that now more West Virginians are dying. About six weeks ago, we averaged about six deaths a week. We are over 60 this week, “he added. As of Friday, the governor’s office said 43 of the state’s 55 counties are now in the highest risk category for new infections.
