AI is going to show us all the colors. While Israel uses “intelligent” programs to boost its offensives against Hamas, as Julian Assange recently recalled, an American engineer amused himself by building a robotic assault rifle augmented by ChatGPT.
< p>The Timepublished an article on the subject last December: “The Gospel” and “Lavender” are two artificial intelligence programs, respectively capable of suggesting buildings to bomb and identifying potential Hamas members to eliminate them. Which leads Julian Assange to say that “the majority of targets in Gaza are bombed thanks to artificial intelligence”, and has given rise to the deadliest bombings of the 21st century. Progress cannot be stopped.
For his part, an American engineer known as STS 3D on Instagram decided to test the limits of ChatGPT using a robotic rifle. In the space of a few seconds, and using simple voice commands, he manages to activate an automated firearm, capable of firing in bursts according to precise instructions. In a video – viewed more than 12 million times and relayed by BFM TV-, the inventor shows the prowess of his little Terminator, which reacts with worrying speed. “Good job, you saved us,” he says to ChatGPT, as if it were a toy.
This incident fortunately prompted an immediate response from OpenAI. The company simply banned it. “We proactively identified this violation of our policies,” OpenAI told the media outlet Futurism. For now, the company’s policy formally prohibits the use of its models to create weapons. But this line of defense still seems vague, especially after a relaxation of the rules in January 2024. This is not an isolated case: already in January, another malicious use of ChatGPT hit the headlines, with the planning of a car bomb attack in Las Vegas. The question is always the same: how to regulate a technology that evolves faster than its standards ?
