New York – Tennis player Markéta Vondroušová experienced conflicting feelings after advancing to the quarterfinals of the singles at the US Open on Monday. The Wimbledon winner was happy that she improved her best in New York after the victory over the American Peyton Stearns 6:7, 6:3, 6:2, but at the same time she had to excuse herself due to a sore elbow for the doubles, which she played alongside her compatriot Barbora Strýcová . She said at the press conference that she regretted the decision. Uncle was understanding for her.

“My hand hurt, so we decided not to start. It's very sad because it's Bára's last tournament. It was a difficult decision. But health must come first. We decided together,” said Vondroušová.
< p>According to the twenty-four-year-old native of Sokolov, the problems started already in the previous match of the 3rd round against the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova. “Probably the heavier balls are also to blame. The season is long and the program here is demanding. I have a day off on Tuesday, so we'll see if it helps,” Vondroušová pointed out.
The tournament's top nine in singles experienced a lot of decision to give up doubles with Strýcová. “It was sad, I cried a little when I told Barbora. But I had a lot of injuries and I don't want to play with others. She is great and she understood. I told her that it was her last tournament and that I didn't want to do it. She but she answered me: Either we will play at one hundred percent, or not at all,” recounted Vondroušová.
She also discussed the decision with coach Jan Hernych. “He told me not to enter the doubles. He also told Báře, she then came to me. She is an experienced player, I am grateful that she is still with me,” stated Vondroušová
Even the demanding program of the last few days did not contribute to Vondroušová's state of health. The Czech tennis player played the 3rd round match against Alexandrova last on the schedule, the match with Stearns was the first on the schedule.
“And that is the reason why it is happening now. I played at midnight, I slept few hours and didn't train because I was tired. I got up at 6:40 today. It's tough for everyone. When you play last and then first, you have to do a lot of things. I didn't sleep much the last few days, so I'm glad I she fought for it,” added Vondroušová.
The thirty-seven-year-old Strýcová will continue at the US Open in mixed doubles alongside the Mexican Santiago González, with whom she has already reached the quarterfinals. The same phase awaits Vondroušová in the singles, her next opponent will be the local Madison Keys.
“Maddie is in good shape now. We trained together before the tournament. I expect a tough match. But anything can happen in the Grand Slam quarterfinals. On the court I will leave everything,” added Vondroušová
