Joffre said the statement, published on the Serbian government's website (which he said was later deleted), included “an indication of Serbia's intention to strengthen economic relations with the Russian Federation in other areas.”

“In this regard, the head of the European Commission considered that there was no reason to hold a meeting with the prime minister,” Joffre explained. The statement, a copy of which was obtained by AFP, said Vucevic spoke with Reshetnikov and the Russian delegation about “further strengthening economic and general cooperation between the two countries.”

Ursula von der Leyen is in Belgrade as part of a tour of six Balkan countries. She met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
