Volcano erupts in Indonesia: dead, thousands injured

On the remote Indonesian island of Flores, the Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano erupted, causing widespread fires and destruction.

At least 10 people were killed, the Associated Press reported, citing Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

The eruption began after midnight. Hot ash was thrown up to 2,000 meters high and fell on neighboring villages. The fires burned down several houses, including a Catholic monastery.

Volcanic material was thrown up to 6 km from the crater. It covered nearby villages and towns with tons of volcanic debris. Locals were evacuated, but the eruption in Wulanggitang district affected up to 10,000 people in six nearby villages of Pululera, Nawokot, Hokeng Jaya, Klatanlo, Boru and Boru Kedang.

Authorities say that as of Monday morning, November 4, at least 10 people have died. And the eruption affected seven villages.

"Rescuers are still looking for more bodies buried under destroyed houses. “All the bodies, including the child, were found within a 4-kilometer radius of the crater,” said Abdul Mukhari, a representative of the National Disaster Management Agency.

The danger level in the region has been raised and the danger zone around the volcano has been expanded to 7 km.
