From marginalization to the elite, 50 years of the
women's soccer team Ten months after being operated on a brain tumor, Virginia Torrecilla has returned to training with her teammates. The 26-year-old Atlético de Madrid and Spanish national team player exercised this Wednesday at the Wanda Sports Center, in Alcalá de Henares. Cured of her illness, she has been in the gym, pedaling on a stationary bike and with a gentle rhythm on a treadmill, still without stepping on the grass and without touching the ball. “We started training again and you don't know how excited I am. This last month has been very heavy, it has been a bit hard, harder than normal, and I have let it be to rest ”, the player explained to the club's media.
Torrecilla , which underwent surgery on May 21, 2020, during the first wave of the pandemic, was undergoing chemotherapy until this month. Her last session was on March 5, but later she had to be re-entered due to her low defenses. This Wednesday she was received like a heroine by her friends and colleagues. In a video recorded by Atlético, you can see how the soccer player enters the gym and walks between two rows formed by the players and the coaching staff of the rojiblanco club. Visibly moved, she stops to thank the gesture: “Thank you very much, girls, I wanted to tell you that I am already starting to go up and I hope to be with you very soon and, if not, for next season, okay? So now, let's continue. ”
The soccer player has been telling during these months on her Instagram account how she lived the fight against cancer: hair loss, her mood or her desire to feel like a player again. “I have won the most important game of my life thanks to you!”, wrote on his social networks after being successfully operated on for the tumor at the University of Navarra Clinic in Madrid. Torrecilla normalized the disease and avoided making it a taboo. Almost three weeks ago, when chemotherapy finished, he thanked all the gestures of support: “This nightmare is over. I am very happy and very happy for everything that life offers me, for everything that I have left […]. I thought I was never going to finish chemotherapy and in the end it has come. So everything comes, everything passes and we leave everything. Much encouragement to all those people who are living very hard diseases. ”
Although Torrecilla has already received a medical discharge to return to training with the team, it is not yet known when he will return to a soccer field. For now, in the next few days he is going to exercise in the gym to pick up his rhythm and regain the muscle mass he lost during the fight against cancer, according to a member of Atlético.
The rojiblanco club and the national team have missed during these months to a capital footballer in her schemes: the midfielder played the 2015 and 2019 World Cups and the 2017 European Championship. In the last World Cup, played in France, she was a starter in all matches, a lung in the middle of the field, formidable in defensive tasks and with a good foot to get the ball played from behind. After the tournament, in which Spain fell in the round of 16 against the United States – ultimately world champion – Virginia Torrecilla became one of the captains of La Roja, but then two blows came: in October 2019 she suffered a sprain in the internal lateral ligament of the left knee and on May 14, 2020, with the Women's League stopped by the coronavirus, they detected cancer. Since then, his team – mate, Alexia Putellas, who knows her since she was a child, dressed for her in every game of Spain the number 14, the usual number of her friend, instead of his, you 11.
