HCB Südtirol and Vienna Capitals opened the ICE ice hockey league placement round with victories on Sunday.
The Bolzano team extended their lead to four points with a 4-2 win over Red Bull Salzburg, while the Vienna Capitals beat the KAC 2-1 after extra time. In the qualifying round, Black Wings Linz won their second win (2-1 against Graz99ers), table leaders Dornbirn won 4: 3 at VSV, and Bratislava Capitals 3-0 at HC Innsbruck.
KAC with just one point
The KAC had finished the basic round with strong results, but at the start of the intermediate round there was only one point for the still reigning champions. Nik Petersen saved him, who equalized the Viennese lead by Ty Loney (32./PP) in the 57th minute. Darren Archibald shot the caps to victory 17 seconds into extra time. “My team played a really good away game. I liked a lot of things,” said coach Dave Cameron.
In Bolzano, the Foxes, winners of the basic round, also started the next phase successfully. Daniel Catenacci gave the South Tyroleans a decisive lead with his power play goal to make it 3-2 (33rd).
Grazer with four poles
In the qualifying round, the Black Wings reported back with their second win in their second game in the battle for the three remaining quarter-finals. Josh Roach shot the Linzer with the goal in the 50th minute for the fifth win in a row. The Grazers had bad luck with four pole shots.
Dornbirn consolidated first place with the first victory in Villach in over two years. The Bulldogs lost a 0-2 lead in the middle third, in the final third Anthony Luciano (48th) and Nikita Jevpalovs (59th / emtpy net) decided the game in favor of Vorarlberg. Bratislava also won the fifth season duel with the Tyroleans in Innsbruck and thus defended second place in the qualifying round.
