Very few Ukrainians wanted to join the Ukrainian Legion in Poland

The head of the Polish Ministry of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, said that the number of Ukrainians who volunteered to join the Ukrainian Legion in Poland was extremely small.

He told Wirtualna Polska about this.

The formation of the Ukrainian Legion was provided for by the bilateral security agreement between Ukraine and Poland. The Ukrainian Legion in Poland was to be trained, armed, and prepared to defend Ukraine, while the Polish army was to be responsible for the training, and Kyiv – for recruitment.

“We prepared for this. It was within the framework of the agreement signed between Poland and Ukraine,” Kosiniak-Kamysh said, assuring that “we are ready to train Ukrainian soldiers.”

The head of the Ministry of Defense recalled that Poland has already trained about 20 thousand Ukrainian soldiers who were sent to the front in Ukraine.

“We are not responsible for recruitment. However, the number of people who were supposed to volunteer from the Ukrainian side is too small. These declarations were very high at the beginning – that even one brigade could be formed, that is, several thousand people. However, this did not happen,” said Kosinyak-Kamysh.

On the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that several thousand Ukrainians had already registered for the legion.

But later, in September, journalists reported that the Ukrainian Legion was still an “idea on paper.”
