Valencia Basket missed a crucial occasion in their attempt to get among the top eight of the regular phase of the Euroleague playoff quarterfinals. They lost to Olympiakos (79-88), in a game with a very strange development. The Greek team, which no longer had any chance of qualifying, dislodged the taronja and came to dominate by 33 points (40-73). And Valencia reacted in the last quarter and came to dream of the feat of coming back when they reached eight points (71-79) with two minutes remaining. But a triple by Vezenkov and two free throws by Spanoulis settled the matter.
Without playing, Bayern (19 wins), Baskonia (18), Real Madrid (18) and Zenit (17 with one game less) breathed, the teams that precede Valencia, now tenth with 17 victories. Two days left. The penultimate one is disputed between this Thursday and Friday; the last, between April 8 and 9. The defeat against Olympiakos makes Valencia no longer dependent on itself. He will be forced to win the two remaining games and wait for the results of the others.
Olympiakos, well managed by Sloukas and with very good contributions from almost all their players, already dominated at half-time (31-44). Valencia were not playing well, Prepelic had not scored, Dubljevic only added one point and Derrick Williams. But the worst was yet to come. The third quarter was a way of the cross for the team led by Jaume Ponsarnau. Olympiakos dominated completely, they got very easy baskets against a misplaced and permissive Valencian defense. Printezis released his arm, like Vezenkov, like Ellis. The triples of the Greek team came after very free shots and several times their centers received completely alone inside the zone.
Valencia's reaction in the last quarter came from the hand of San Emeterio, Marinkovic and Prepelic, who woke up from his lethargy. Despite the great defensive pressure all over the field, the change of pace of the game, and the 38-14 run in the last ten minutes, Valencia could not complete the feat of coming back 33 points.
