Uzhgorod will be connected by Eurorail/Ukrzaliznytsia

Uzhgorod becomes the first regional center to be connected with Europe by Eurorail. This will help to integrate Ukrainian railways into the European Union.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal and Ukrzaliznytsia announced this.

On April 11, a European track construction project was launched in Transcarpathia Chop-Uzhgorod. This will make it possible to launch a direct railway connection between Uzhgorod and Vienna, Bratislava, Kosice, Budapest, Prague, Bucharest, Dresden and Belgrade.

Implementation of the project will create a transport hub in Uzhgorod that will provide convenient and quick transfer of passengers between broad-gauge trains and trains of EU countries, Shmyhal said.

The main stage of construction will begin in May. The cost of the project is 1.3 billion hryvnias, and the implementation period is 14 months. The transport connection is implemented with 50% grant co-financing from the EU fund Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).

The possibility of extending the Eurotrack from Uzhgorod to Lviv is also being considered. This will be an important step for joining Lviv to the two European Transport Corridors TEN-T – Rhine-Danube and Mediterranean.
