US to build coalition against Nord Stream 2

Investing.com – The US wants to form a coalition to prevent the completion of Russia's Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This was announced by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in an interview with the German newspaper Bild, without specifying with whom the coalition will be organized.

According to Washington, the pipeline threatens the security of Europe. According to Pompeo, European countries may become dependent on gas coming from Russia, as well as Ukraine, through which the transit of energy resources is now carried out.

“We hope that Nord Stream 2 will not be completed, we are working to create a coalition to prevent this. We hope that the German government will also begin to consider it [the project] in a similar vein, ”said Pompeo.

The US Secretary of State also assured that Washington will definitely respond to the attempt to poison the opposition politician Alexei Navalny. He added that so far no sanctions have been imposed on Russia, since all the facts of this incident are not known.

In December 2019, the United States introduced prohibitive measures against companies involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2. As a result, the Swiss pipe-laying company AllSeas refused to complete the work. Now Germany is also considering sanctions against the project, although earlier German Chancellor Angela Merkel supported him.

Nord Stream 2 is to pass along the bottom of the Baltic Sea from the Russian port of Ust-Luga to the German Greifswald. The length of the pipeline is over 1200 km, the capacity is 55 billion cubic meters. m per year.
