US State Department: North Korea's alleged involvement in war against Ukraine still under investigation

The United States cannot yet confirm the veracity of reports that North Korea is sending troops to Russia to fight in Ukraine, State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said on Monday, October 21, stressing that the investigation is still ongoing, and if this information is confirmed, the United States will consult with its allies on further action in this case, Voice of America reports.

Answering a journalist's question about why it takes so long to verify the statements made by the authorities of Ukraine and South Korea, Patel said: "I will not go into detail about ongoing processes that may be aimed at verifying or establishing the veracity of certain information. We have seen reports that the DPRK has sent soldiers to fight alongside Russian forces [in Ukraine]. We cannot confirm whether these reports are true, but if true, this would be a dangerous and deeply troubling development in Russia's war against Ukraine. We will continue to consult with our allies and partners about the implications of such a drastic step."

According to the State Department spokesman, if these reports are confirmed, it would demonstrate "the growing desperation that Russia feels in the course of its ongoing military aggression."

BAGNET recalls that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and South Korea's National Intelligence Service previously presented evidence, including videos showing North Korean troops being sent to Russia. According to Seoul, 12,000 North Korean special forces are currently undergoing training at the Sergievsky training camp, wearing Russian military uniforms and holding Russian IDs.
