The US Senate unveils deal on immigration and aid to Ukraine

The US Senate found on Sunday an agreement between Democrats and Republicans to release new aid funds to Ukraine, and to toughen US migration policy.

The adoption of this text is, however, far from being guaranteed, with more and more Republicans in the House of Representatives opposing the sending of new funds to Kiev to make facing Russia's invasion.

The deal, which is estimated to be worth $118 billion, would also allow the U.S. United to significantly restrict illegal migrant crossings at the southern border.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he would take steps to hold an initial vote on the bill on Wednesday.

This text is the result of several months of bipartisan negotiations with a trio of senators: the Democratic senator of Connecticut Chris Murphy, the independent senator of Arizona Kyrsten Sinema and the senator of Oklahoma James Lankford, the x27;one of the most conservative Republicans in the Senate.

The legislation would provide greater control of the U.S. southern border, including requiring the Department of Homeland Security to close the border if there are more than 5,000 border crossing attempts per day for seven days.

Among the planned financing :

Former President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson attacked the border deal as too weak. Their opposition threatens to derail the legislation.

If Congress is unable to pass the deal, lawmakers will have to decide whether to try to pass the aid package. x27;Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan separately from border and immigration measures.

US President Joe Biden said on Sunday We have reached a bipartisan agreement on national security that includes the strongest migration reforms and fairer in decades. I strongly support it, the president said in a statement, while urging Congress to adopt it quickly.
