Shakeri, an Afghan citizen who immigrated to the United States as a child, was deported after serving 14 years in prison for robbery. He also told investigators that he was tasked by an IRGC contact to plan the murders of two Jewish-Americans living in New York and Israeli tourists in Sri Lanka. The Justice Department says Shakeri met Rivera and another unidentified accomplice while in prison.
According to the indictment, Shakeri provided some details of the alleged plots in a series of recorded phone interviews with FBI agents while in Iran. He explained that he began cooperating with the FBI in an effort to reduce the prison sentence of an acquaintance in U.S. custody.
While the Justice Department found some of the information Shakeri provided to be false, his testimony about a plot to kill Trump and Iran’s willingness to pay significant sums to do so was found to be credible.
The plot, uncovered just days after Trump’s victory over Democrat Kamala Harris, reflects what federal authorities say is Tehran’s ongoing efforts to assassinate multiple U.S. politicians, including Trump. Last summer, the Justice Department indicted a Pakistani national with ties to Iran for allegedly attempting to assassinate U.S. officials.
“Few countries pose as grave a threat to U.S. national security as Iran,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said Friday. FBI Director Christopher Wray added that the case demonstrates Iran’s “continued brazen efforts” to assassinate Trump. attack US citizens, including Trump and “other government leaders and critics of the regime in Tehran.”
