The US announced the imposition of new sanctions against 100 officials in Belarus involved in undermining democracy within the country. This is evidenced by a statement by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
Sanctions were introduced on the second anniversary of the seizure of power in Belarus by the Lukashenka regime. The United States believes that the events of 2020 damaged democratic institutions and hindered democratic transitions in Belarus.
"Today we announce the next steps to imposition of visa restrictions against 100 regime officials and their affiliates”, – Blinken said.
The list includes officials from the presidential administration, law enforcement agencies and the CEC. Sanctions were also imposed against the state television and radio company Belteleradio, the military leadership and administrations at universities. p>
Blinken believes that the mentioned structures were involved in the torture of oppositionists, journalists and protesters, and at the universities they were engaged in the expulsion of active students.
