Daniel Kritenbrink US diplomat warns China of miscalculations on Taiwan
China's efforts to coerce and destroy Taiwan are fraught with miscalculations and its pressure campaign is likely to continue, said top US East Asia diplomat Daniel Kritenbrink.
China, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory and is conducting military exercises around the island this month to show its outrage at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taipei.
Speaking by conference call, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian Affairs and the Pacific, Kritenbrink said China used Pelosi's visit as an excuse to change the status quo, threatening the world.
The US has made it clear to China that its approach to Taiwan remains unchanged, including Washington's commitment to the “one of China” and refusing to support formal independence for Taiwan, Kritenbrink added.
“While our policy has not changed, the growing Beijing's persuasion. The words and deeds of the PRC are deeply destabilizing, he said. “They are fraught with miscalculations and pose a threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”
