A US destroyer shot down two anti-ship ballistic missiles fired from Yemen on Saturday, while was responding to a distress call from a container ship hit in another attack, the army said.

The missiles were launched from territory controlled by Houthi rebels, close to Iran, US Central Command (Centcom) said on social media.

According to Centcom, the destroyers USS Gravely and USS Laboon responded to a request for assistance from Maersk Hangzhou, a Singapore-flagged Danish container ship, which reported being struck by a missile in Red Sea.

During the rescue operation, the USS Gravely shot down missiles that had been fired at US military ships, Centcom added.

Since the start of the war on October 7 between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis, who control much of Yemen, have increased attacks in the Red Sea against ships they believe are linked to Israel, in solidarity with the Palestinian territory bombed and besieged.
