U.S. officials have warned that Russia could target American defense companies as part of a potentially escalated sabotage campaign, The New York Times reports.

The warning says Russian intelligence services are conducting sabotage operations against European defense companies “with the aim of undermining the bloc's support for Ukraine.”

The Russian campaign increases the risk to American companies abroad and at least potentially in the United States, officials say.

The warning was issued by the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, which advises American businesses on intelligence threats from potential adversaries.

The Counterintelligence and Security Center also warned of increased attempts by the Russian and Chinese governments to steal intellectual property or launch cyberattacks on American businesses.

Defense executives are being urged to be vigilant about their facilities and employees.

The intelligence agency also said defense companies should be especially alert to potential disruptions and should beef up their physical and online security.

In addition to protecting their websites, the agency advised companies to beef up the personal security of executives and other key employees.

In particular, the CSC said defense contractors should be careful about discussing travel plans, changing their routes to and from work, and reporting suspicious incidents.

The warning, according to people familiar with the matter, was prompted in part by concerns about a Russian assassination attempt on the head of a German arms maker.

–Those involved in work in Ukraine or other geopolitical conflicts should be careful about disclosing work, travel, and personal and family information online. Attackers could use this information to determine access, location, and personal vulnerabilities., – the warning says.
