US lawmakers have passed a law to prevent any US president from unilaterally withdrawing the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The text seems addressed to former American President Donald Trump, who does not hold NATO in his heart and who wants to reconquer the White House.

The measure was taken as part of an annual defense spending bill that passed Congress on Thursday in a largely bipartisan final vote (310-118).

A small section of the $886 billion U.S. National Defense Authorization Act includes a series of rules relating to a withdrawal from the Atlantic Alliance.

The text stipulates that no president may suspend, terminate, denounce or withdraw from NATO without an act of Congress or the approval of two-thirds of the United States Senate.

It also requires the President of the United States to notify Congress 180 days before undertaking a withdrawal plan.

All eyes are on Donald Trump. Without being cited, the former President of the United States appears more and more as the favorite in next year's elections, benefiting from the best polls of his entire career. Mr. Trump has always been critical of NATO.

Some of his aides like John Bolton have previously stated that Donald Trump already considered withdrawing the United States from NATO during his first term. He would withdraw from the Atlantic Alliance during his second term, Mr Bolton believes.

Mr. Trump's election platform states that if he is re-elected, he will review the NATO mandate.

We must complete the process we began under my administration of fundamentally reevaluating the x27;NATO's purpose and mission.

Although adopted by Congress, the new provision remains hypothetical. It is unclear whether it would withstand a constitutional challenge in court on the grounds that it usurps the president's role in foreign affairs.
