The US State Department has approved the possible sale of drones and missiles to Taiwan worth about $360 million, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, which is part of the Pentagon, reported, Voice of America reports.

The United States is legally obligated to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself, despite the lack of formal diplomatic relations, which has continually angered Beijing.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has been increasing military pressure on the island, including military maneuvers around the island in May, after the inauguration of President Lai Qingde.

"The sale will help enhance the recipient's security and assist in maintaining political stability, military balance and economic progress in the region", – the Pentagon agency said in a statement.
