Unprecedented protection: HVGP hypersonic missile lit up in Japan

According to analysts, the Hyper-Velocity Gliding Projectile missile will be produced in two main versions — Block 1 and Block 2, each of which has distinctive features. The range of the first option is estimated at 900 km.

On September 30, a photo of a launcher, which probably belongs to Japan's latest missile system, was published on the Internet. The photo attracted the attention of experts, who noted that it is a hypersonic Hyper-Velocity Gliding Projectile (HVGP), reports Army Recognition.

This system is expected to enter service with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) as early as 2026, three years earlier than originally planned. The decision to accelerate the HVGP program was prompted by growing concerns about military activity by China and North Korea.

The HVGP system is designed to provide an unprecedented level of strategic deterrence thanks to the missile's ability to travel at hypersonic speeds, evade air defense systems and deliver precision strikes on targets. The range of the missile is estimated at 900 kilometers, and its ability to change the trajectory in flight makes it a particularly difficult target for the enemy.

Technical features of HVGP

HVGP will be produced in two main versions — Block 1 and Block 2, each with distinct features and functionality.

Block 1 — it is an early deployment model equipped with an accelerator and a basic hypersonic glide system. The missile is about 8-9 meters long and uses technology used in Japan's Type 12 Surface-to-Ship Missile (SSM). An important element of the design is the launch booster, which accelerates the rocket to hypersonic speed, after which the sliding glider is activated, allowing the rocket to continue its flight without constant propulsion.

Block 2 — this is a more advanced version that has an improved sliding mechanism and a more powerful accelerator. The length of this version exceeds 10 meters, which is due to the increased flight range and the ability to transport more fuel to achieve higher speed. This variant will be equipped with a more sophisticated guidance system that incorporates both inertial navigation and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), enabling it to hit targets with high precision even when the flight path changes.

Primary mission of the HVGP — defense of Japanese islands and repelling potential incursions, especially in disputed areas of the East China Sea. For this, the complex will be launched from mobile ground platforms, and integration with fire control systems and satellite guidance systems will ensure high accuracy of strikes.

Observers noted that the development of hypersonic weapons is part of Japan's broader efforts to modernize its missile arsenal. In addition to domestic production, Japan actively purchases missile systems from the USA.
