After the dismissals announced Monday to the English-speaking Montreal radio station CJAD, the Unifor union denounced the fact that Bell Media has slashed more than a hundred jobs in the Toronto area.
According to Unifor, more than a hundred Bell Media employees have been dismissed in the past few days in the Toronto area and surrounding areas, including positions as journalists.
“Bell Media had said that news gathering was something sacred, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with cuts in newsrooms,” said Unifor media section director Howard Law, by press release.
Monday, the daily Montreal Gazette revealed that several positions, including journalists, were cut at the CJAD radio station, where the employees were not unionized. Some unionized positions were also cut at CTV Montreal.
In order to compensate for these departures, journalists from the English-speaking news channel will have to produce radio reports, in addition to their regular television assignments and to feed the CTV website.
“Our members are in shock. […] Not only are jobs being cut today, but the remaining employees are being asked to work even more. There is something wrong, ”denounced a representative of Unifor at the Gazette.
