Marta Kostyuk explained this by the fact that Victoria Azarenka did not openly condemn the war in Ukraine

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk refused to shake hands with Victoria Azarenka from Belarus after she lost her in the second round of the US Open on Thursday.

Thus, the animosity between the players over the war in Ukraine seeped into the New York Grand Slam.

Azarenka won Kostyuk with a score of 6:2, 6:3, but instead of the traditional handshake after the match, the athletes exchanged racket touches.

According to Kostyuk, in this way she expressed disappointment to Azarenka, who did not condemn the war more openly.

Kostyuk stated that Azarenka did not share her opinion about the war with her, and added: “I think she could have done more.”

The 20-year-old tennis player from Kyiv said that she thought that a handshake would be the wrong thing in the circumstances in which she seemed.

Belarus is a close ally of Russia and allowed the Russian military to use its territory for attacks on Ukraine.
