Ukrainian F-16 pilots received helmets with unique capabilities

The Air Command «Center» of the Ukrainian Air Force published a photo of an F-16 pilot, drawing attention to one of the most technologically interesting elements of the crew. The photo shows a modernized HGU-55/P helmet equipped with the JHMCS (Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System) system.

Military observer Yigal Levin writes about this. He points out that the JHMCS system provides pilots with unique capabilities: with its help, you can «guide» infrared missiles by sight, as well as see targets detected by radar or received via the Datalink data exchange system without the need to use the windshield indicator (ILS).

For comparison, a similar system exists on Soviet-made Ukrainian fighters (MiG-29 and Su-27), but it is significantly inferior to JHMCS.

The Soviet system is less reliable, limited in functionality and is used only for guiding infrared missiles and working with the aircraft's electronic-optical complex. Due to its shortcomings and fragility, it is rarely used in real missions, while JHMCS is actively used on Western aircraft.
