Recently, representatives of the Ukrainian community of authors, together with their Polish counterparts from the ZAiKS authoring organization and with the assistance of the European Union of Societies of Authors and Composers GESAC, held a number of meetings in Brussels to discuss tools to support Ukrainian culture as part of Europe, in particular, they met with representatives of the European Parliament , the European Commission, as well as the current and future Presidency of the EU Council.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by representatives of the European Commission and the European Parliament, who noted the important role of culture in protecting freedom and democracy and expressed solidarity with Ukrainian authors in this difficult time .

Also in Paris and Vilnius, events were organized by partners of the public organization Ukrainian Agency for Copyright and Related Rights (PA UAASP). More details about each event and its results are discussed later in the article.

Meetings with representatives of the current and subsequent presidency of the EU Council, the European Parliament and the European Commission in Brussels

Valeriy Kharchishin, Director General of UAASP NGO, and Ludmila Tsymbal, Director of International Cooperation and Licensing of UAASP NGO, together with representatives of the Polish author organization ZAiKS, which has been providing comprehensive support to Ukrainian authors since the first days of the war, visited Brussels. The visit started with a meeting with the cultural attache of the current French Presidency of the Council of the EU and the next Czech Presidency. Valery spoke about the life of Ukrainian authors in the conditions of war and the importance of supporting Ukrainian culture.

The next meeting was held with members of the European Parliament, in particular, with the chairman of the committee on culture and education, Sabine Verheijen, and the chairman of the European Parliament's delegation to the Parliamentary Association Committee between Ukraine and the EU, Vitold Waszczykowski. Ukrainian authors also met with a member of the Cabinet of the EU Commissioner for Innovation, Science, Culture, Education and Youth – Ms. Laurent Bertrand and other representatives of the European Commission.

“In the European Parliament and the European Commission, we were met very friendly, with a sincere desire to help us in this difficult time for the country, to support Ukrainian culture. The very fact that the members of the EP met Ukrainian authors as full-fledged representatives of the creative European community and discussed the tools to support Ukrainian culture as part of the European one is a very important event. We hope that on August 24, with a big concert of Ukrainian music in the capital of the EU, in Brussels, we will mark the beginning of the coexistence of Ukrainian culture as part of equals among equals and free among free”, – Valery Kharchyshyn commented on the meeting.

Members of the European Parliament and the European Commission expressed their solidarity with Ukrainian creators and readiness for full support of representatives of the creative industry of Ukraine, noting the importance of culture as the basis of the nation and democratic structure. The parties discussed the importance of assistance to the Ukrainian cultural sector, including through existing funding programs and additional instruments that can be developed, in particular, to ensure greater exchange and joint projects to promote Ukrainian culture. Valeriy Kharchishin also called for the maximum blocking of Russian cultural initiatives.

Partners of the NGO “UAASP”, the Polish author organization ZAiKS spoke about the efforts of the international author community aimed at helping Ukrainian authors, in particular, about the international solidarity fund Creators for Ukraine , which today raised 1.5 million euros, which helped many Ukrainian authors and their families both on the territory of Ukraine and in the countries hosting our migrants.

Member of the Supervisory Board of the NGO UAASP and frontman of the TNMK group Oleg “Fagot” Mikhailyuta and Director for International Cooperation and Licensing of the NGO UAASP Lyudmila Tsymbal, together with their colleagues from the Polish authoring organization ZAiKS, met with representatives of the French partner organization in Paris. The meeting took place in one of the oldest collective management organizations SACEM, which unites about 183 thousand authors and music publishers. The meeting was attended by SACEM representatives, in particular Serge Peratoner, General Secretary of the Management Board, and Cecile Rap-Weber, Chief Executive Officer. The parties discussed the state of the creative sector in Ukraine, the strengthening of cooperation between artists from Ukraine and colleagues from France, and the importance of continuing to support Ukrainian authors.

Also, Oleg Mikhailyuta, together with the Ukrainian-Polish delegation, visited the main office of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers CISAC, which unites 228 societies from 119 countries of the world and whose member is NGO UAASP. The Ukrainian authors were met at the head office by the General Director of the CISAC confederation, Gadi Oron, who during the meeting stated: “It was inspiring to hear from Ukrainian authors about their extraordinary courage and resilience, and also to learn how the Creators for Ukraine Foundation supported many people. The message of the CISAC world community, voiced at our meeting, was simple: we stand on the side of the creators of Ukraine, we will not forget and will not stop supporting them.

Members of CISAC have demonstrated the incredible power of unity and the importance of global association in the field of creative industries. Representatives of the Ukrainian author community thanked their international author family for their support, in particular, Oleg Mikhailyuta noted: “Culture is a soft power. Russia knows this and is trying to dominate Ukraine through the imposition of its culture. But she will never succeed. The Ukrainian people and Ukrainian creators are stronger than ever. With your help, we will win.”

Valery Kharchyshyn took part in the discussion on the topic “How can we help Ukrainian creators?” in Vilnius. The event was organized by the Lithuanian organization for the collective management of property rights LATGA, a partner of the NGO UAASP.

At the meeting, in addition to providing financial support to Ukrainian figures, Valeriy raised the topic of Lithuanian cultural policy regarding the aggressor Russia.

Valery Kharchishin presented the current situation in the cultural life of Ukraine and talked about the assistance provided by international organizations. During the discussion, the Deputy Minister of Culture of Lithuania, Vygintas Gasparavičius, spoke about quite a significant contribution of Lithuania to Ukrainian artists, in turn, Deputy Director General of the Lithuanian television and radio company LRT Gytis Oganauskas announced the impact of the war on the content of the channel, and Gediminas, board member of the Event Industry Association Jaunius spoke about the importance of measures to support Ukraine and the challenges they face.
