Ukraine wants India to persuade Moscow to join peace talks

Kyiv believes that India should play a more active role in ending Russia's war against Ukraine. In particular, we are talking about peace talks.

This was stated by Ukrainian Ambassador to India Alexander Polishchuk, quoted by Bloomberg.

Thus, Ukraine wants New Delhi to “moderate” negotiations with Russia and use its connections to convince Moscow to join peace talks. This, according to the diplomat, is important for India if it seeks to obtain a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

As Polischuk said, Ukraine has proposed that India hold a Peace Summit before November 2024, but it is not yet clear whether New Delhi will agree.

The ambassador believes that India should not be content with playing the “postman who carries messages between Ukraine and Russia,” while the country needs to play a more “credible role.”

In August, the Indian prime minister arrived in Kiev, a few weeks after visiting Russia. Before his trip to Ukraine, Narendra Modi said he intended to discuss the war.

During a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, Modi said he wanted to play a role “as a friend” in the peaceful settlement of the Russia-Ukraine war. Earlier, the Indian Prime Minister told Russian President Vladimir Putin that “peace talks cannot be successful amid guns and bombs,” and stressed that “the heart bleeds” when children die.

Mode also discussed his visit to Ukraine with Putin. According to the Indian politician, he and Putin exchanged views on the Russian-Ukrainian war.

In June, India sent its representative to the Peace Summit in Switzerland organized by Ukraine, but did not sign a communiqué on supporting the three points of the “peace formula.”
