Whether it’s Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog in Colorado or Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner in Toronto, Tyson Barrie has rubbed shoulders with offensive stars since the start of his career. However, none of them seemed to have prepared him for the games he was to witness in Edmonton.

Acquired through the free agent market last October, the 29-year-old defenseman played his first two games with the Oilers earlier this week.
Friday afternoon, the day after the 5-2 victory over the Canucks, the British Columbian still couldn’t get over the anthology that led to Connor McDavid’s second goal of the night.
In this power-play streak, we see Leon Draisaitl put the puck back as he crosses the red line. McDavid grabs the puck on his own blue line before blasting off into Canucks territory.
Once in the enemy zone, he pretends to outflank Alexander Edler before suddenly forking into the enclave and outsmarting Thatcher Demko with a sharp shot from the wrists.
Posted just behind Draisaitl, Barrie believed the German’s pass was intended for him.
“I didn’t even know Connor was behind me. Then, I saw him go by in a gust of wind, he said in videoconference. I had just tried to hit the puck on the ice. I’m glad I missed it. ”
Barrie was so surprised he was almost 200 feet from his captain when the latter moved the lines.
“I was in the process of positioning myself to take a breakout when Connor scored … I’m still trying to get used to playing with them,” he continued, laughing and swearing he was not a rigged game.
Like a mule
Dave Tippett agreed when a colleague pointed out to him that several observers were convinced that it was a game concocted in advance.
“It was such a good pass from Leon that he had to make sure no one intercepted him. Not even our own player, ”exclaimed the Oilers coach.
Third round pick (64e overall) of the Avalanche in the 2009 draft, Barrie shared the same locker room as MacKinnon for six seasons. He offered the following comparison.
“Nate’s skate kick is powerful. He rushes like a mule. Connor’s is lighter and smoother. Their type of speed is different, but they are both very efficient. ”
In the evening, the Oilers announced that they had placed goaltender Mike Smith’s name on the long-term injured list.
They recalled Olivier Rodrigue, loaned since the fall to the 99ers of Graz, of the ICE hockey league, the best Austrian circuit. Once his 14-day quarantine is complete, he will join the Oilers reserve squad.
The team did not disclose the nature of the 38-year-old masked man’s injury.
