We learned about the successes obtained by Jean-François Bergeron and Antonin Décarie respectively as a firefighter and vice-president for a boxing promotion company.
The courses of Benoit Gaudet, Fathi Missaoui, Baha Laham, Adrian Diaconu and David Cadieux are also worthy of mention. They found their way outside the ring.
The Journal of Montreal continues his record with seven more stories of boxers who hung their gloves a few years ago.
Lucian Bute and Robert Cléroux have marked the history of Quebec boxing in different decades.
Bute, who was world champion for almost five years, was adopted by Quebecers for his performances, but also for his charisma. Today, he owns buildings in West Montreal. He has never had any regrets since the announcement of his retirement in 2019.
As for Cléroux, the 82-year-old is still as straight as an oak tree. The former Canadian heavyweight champion dug into his old memories. Through his colorful words, we realize that boxing has changed a lot in recent decades.
Pure passion
The paths of other boxers are fascinating. They have managed to find a job that fascinates them, but also allows them to live a respectable life.
Sébastien Gauthier, who has eaten boxing since his teenage years, has remained in the field as a trainer, but also as an analyst on television and radio. For his part, Stéphane “Brutus” Tessier became inspector for the Régie during boxing galas at the end of his career between the cables. An individual respected by all stakeholders.
The next few pages will allow you to hear from some boxers who have stepped away from the spotlight for various reasons. Good reading !
