The Federal District Court in Washington has resumed consideration of the criminal case against US presidential candidate Donald Trump for meddling in the 2020 elections. CBS News journalists report this.
It is noted that before this, a panel of three judges of the appeals court concluded that Trump could not be shielded from charges by issuing a brief, unsigned order to reopen the case.
So, the case was returned to the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit after the Supreme Court, by a majority, held that former presidents have immunity from prosecution for official acts they committed while in office.
“But on its own motion, the court ordered the case returned to the district court for further consideration consistent with the Supreme Court's opinion,” the journalists note.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan has taken over the criminal case. She must now interpret and apply the court's ruling. In particular, she must determine which of Trump's conducts described in the indictment are “official” and which are subject to criminal prosecution.
A four-count indictment in one of four cases against Trump accuses him of illegally conspiring with associates to cling to the presidency and overturn the election he lost to Joe Biden.
A hearing is scheduled for Aug. 16 in Washington, a procedural move that analysts say will reset the criminal case with a flurry of motions and future hearings. However, due to the large volume of work, the trial will obviously not take place before the presidential election in November, where Trump is the Republican candidate.
According to analysts, if he wins the election, he will most likely appoint his own attorney general to stop the criminal case.
“If Trump is elected president, he may appoint an attorney general who will likely order the case to be dropped,” the article notes.
As reported by BAGNET, Trump's “peace plan” for Ukraine may not be what is currently being claimed. On the contrary, it will provide for increased military aid to Ukraine, membership in the European Union and NATO.
