Trump Nominates Kennedy Jr. to Become Secretary of Health and Human Services

President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday, November 14, announced the nomination of Robert Kennedy Jr. to head the Department of Health and Human Services.

"The safety and health of all Americans – “is the most important task of any administration, and the Department of Health and Human Services will play a huge role in protecting people from the harmful chemicals, pollutants, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and food additives that have led to a serious health crisis in our country,” Donald Trump wrote in a post on the Truth Social platform, as reported by the Voice of America.

The Department of Health and Human Services oversees the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Medicare and Medicaid programs, which provide health insurance to low-income people, people over 65, and people with disabilities.

With a budget of $3.09 trillion for fiscal year 2024, or 22.8 percent of the federal budget, the HHS plays a key role for tens of millions of Americans.

Kennedy, the son of Senator Robert Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy, is serving on Trump’s transition team, reviewing resumes for key government health positions.

In recent weeks, Kennedy has voiced his priorities: combating the chronic disease epidemic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and autism, as well as reducing the amount of chemicals in food.
