Donald Trump, while as US President, made it clear that he believed that Ukraine should be part of Russia, writes The Guardian, citing a book by The New York Times reporter David Sanger, who cited the words of Trump's ex-adviser Fiona Hill.
Sanger released a book called “The New Cold Wars: The Rise of China, the Russian Invasion, and America's Struggle to Defend the West.” The book will be released in the US on Tuesday, and The Guardian has obtained a copy.
Fiona Hill was senior director for European and Russian affairs at the US National Security Council from 2017-2019.
"Trump has made it very clear that he believes that Ukraine, and, of course, Crimea, should be part of Russia", – Hill says in the book.
"He really couldn’t come to terms with the idea of Ukraine being an independent state,", – she added.
Sanger concludes that Trump's view of Ukraine was "essentially identical" with the view of Vladimir Putin, who ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 – after Trump left office.
Hill was a key witness in Trump's first impeachment trial over his efforts to blackmail Ukraine. She is co-author of the book "Mr. Putin: Operative in the Kremlin" – biography, which is very popular.
