Sales of tours in travel agencies fell sharply due to a worsening epidemiological situation and rumors about the possibility of new restrictions, the press secretary of the Russian Union of Travel Industry (RST) Irina Tyurina told Interfax-Tourism on Tuesday.
“Against the background of rumors about the possible closure of borders, as well as panic due to the increase in the incidence of coronavirus and the threat of self-isolation in this regard, travel agencies note a decrease or even a complete stop in sales of tours in Russia and abroad. If it comes to bookings, then no more than two or three days before departure. Senator Ryazansky added fuel to the fire, saying on Monday that due to an increase in the number of cases of infection, borders may be closed, “she said.
As Tyurina emphasized, problems arose with the sale of not only tours abroad, but also in Russia. “If there are those who want to go somewhere, then only a day or two before departure. True, there are no cancellations of already purchased tours. People have taken a wait-and-see attitude, do not book for long-term dates, because they do not want new cancellations and transfers,” she added.
According to the PCT, until the beginning of this week, sales were doing well, but since Monday they fell sharply. “Sales of Turkey are hampered by the fact that tourists are afraid of imposing quarantines upon arrival or closure of borders. At the same time, there is still a demand for recreation in their own or neighboring regions – for example, in Rostov-on-Don they buy Kavminvody, one-day excursions are popular, trips to country hotels for the weekend “, – said Tyurina.
On Monday, Senator Valery Ryazansky said that against the background of an increase in cases of coronavirus in the Russian Federation, a decision may be made to close borders and restrict air traffic in order to reduce the number of movements and thereby affect the dynamics of the spread of COVID-19. Later, the headquarters for the fight against coronavirus denied this statement, saying that it did not plan to make a decision on the closure of borders and restriction of air traffic.
In Russia, an increase in the number of cases of coronavirus infection began again in September. So, on October 6, more than 11.6 thousand new infections were detected, this is the maximum since May 11.
