Ukraine became a candidate for EU membership today

The European Parliament adopted a resolution supporting granting Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidates for accession to the European Union.

According to the press center of the European Parliament, the resolution was supported by 529 MEPs, against – 45, abstained – 14. The decision on the candidacy is to be made today by the European Council.

«Parliament adopted on Thursday a resolution calling on the heads of state and government, who are holding summits today and tomorrow, to provide Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova EU candidate status “immediately”, — summed up in the department.

The European Parliament added that they are ready to make an appropriate decision on Georgia, “when its government fulfills” priorities set by the European Commission.

European deputies are also convinced that against the backdrop of a full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership will be equated with a demonstration of Kyiv's leadership and determination. At the same time, they emphasize that there is no “fast track”; for EU membership and accession remains a structured, merit-based process requiring the fulfillment of EU membership criteria and dependent on the effective implementation of reforms.

Important: Resolutions and decisions of the European Parliament are recommendations, they are not binding.
