President Volodymyr Zelensky instructed Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to work out the issue of introducing a mandatory exam for those wishing to obtain Ukrainian citizenship. To do this, you need to change the law. This is stated in the response of the head of state to the relevant petition, which has collected more than 26,000 signatures out of 25,000 required for consideration.
The President thanked the signatories for their active citizenship and noted that, according to Ukrainian legislation, one of the conditions for obtaining citizenship by a foreigner is “knowledge of the state language or its understanding in a volume sufficient for communication”.
In addition, Zelensky said that at the moment there is a procedure for conducting an exam for the level of knowledge of the state language, it is enshrined in a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers dated April 14, 2021.
“The issue of introducing a mandatory exam for acquiring Ukrainian citizenship will require a legislative settlement,” the response to the petition says.
