TikTok application resumes operations in the US after Trump's promise to postpone blocking the platform

The TikTok platform is starting to resume its work in the US after the newly elected President Donald Trump announced that he will postpone the blocking of the social network.

CNN writes about this.

The platform was down in the US for 12 hours. As TikTok announced, the social network has again become available to more than 170 million Americans.

«This is a strong stand in support of the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that will keep TikTok in the United States», — the platform's statement says.

Recall that today, January 19, Donald Trump said that he would postpone the blocking of TikTok, but noted that he wants the social platform to be at least half owned by American investors.

According to the Republican, immediately after his inauguration on January 20, he will issue an order postponing the ban on TikTok in order to «make a deal to protect our national security».

The order also plans to confirm that no company that previously helped prevent the blocking of TikTok in the United States will be held liable.

At the same time, Trump stressed that he wants the «United States to have 50% ownership in the joint venture».

More on the TikTok ban

Chinese tech giant ByteDance launched TikTok based on the popular karaoke app Musical.ly, which it acquired in 2017. Since then, the app has been under close scrutiny by national security officials in Washington, who fear possible influence from the Chinese government.

TikTok has skyrocketed in popularity among Americans, with 170 million people using it, about half the country.

Lawmakers and the Biden administration have argued that as long as TikTok is owned by a Chinese company, it is subject to the dictates of China’s authoritarian regime.

The US Congress has passed a bill that would force ByteDance to sell TikTok to non-Chinese owners within six months. And if the sale doesn’t happen — the application will be banned in the country.

On January 17, the US Supreme Court upheld a law that bans TikTok in the United States from January 19, 2025.

Sky news wrote that US President Joe Biden will not introduce measures to block the TikTok network in the country. The Biden administration decided to pass the decision on this to the future team of Donald Trump.

On January 19, it became known that TikTok stopped working in the US.
