Three people injured in shark attacks in Texas, Florida

This photo provided by the Texas Department of Public Safety shows a shark off South Padre Island, Texas, on July 4, 2024.

Three people were injured in shark attacks in the United States last week, Reuters reports.

All three incidents occurred on Thursday, July 4. A 21-year-old Ohio man was bitten on the leg while standing in knee-deep water at New Smyrna Beach in Florida. The victim was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said four people were involved in shark encounters on South Padre Island on the Gulf Coast that day, and two were bitten. The victims were taken to a hospital, but their conditions are unknown.

There have been 28 shark attacks in the United States this year, according to the website Tracking Sharks. In addition to Thursday’s incidents, at least three more have occurred since June 2, including a great white attack in California and a fatal shark attack in Hawaii that left a man dead.

The Florida Museum of Natural History said the number of unprovoked shark attacks and shark fatalities worldwide has increased slightly in 2023.

There were 69 attacks last year, including 10 fatalities. Most of these incidents occurred in the United States, where sharks attacked people at least 36 times a year, twice with fatal consequences.
