The Spanish summit is expected to consider Finland and Sweden's bids to join the alliance

Waving red hammer and sickle flags, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Madrid in Sunday, protesting the NATO summit to be held in the Spanish capital this week.

NATO leaders will meet in Madrid June 29-30 amid heightened security amid the unprecedented challenge of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, faced by the Alliance.

NATO is expected to consider applications from Finland and Sweden to join NATO, which is opposed by a member of the military-political bloc – Turkey.

The Scandinavian countries have submitted an application in connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a special military operation, which, he says, is partly caused by the admission of a number of Eastern European countries into NATO since the 1990s.

“Let there be tanks of beer and tapas,” chanted the demonstrators, who argued that NATO's increased defense spending in Europe was a threat to peace.

. The solution they offer is more armaments and wars, and we always pay for it. So no to NATO, no to military bases, let the Americans go and leave us alone without wars and weapons,” retired Madrid Concha Hoyos told Reuters.

Another demonstrator, 29-year-old Jaled, said that NATO is not the solution to the war in Ukraine.

According to the organizers, 5,000 people took part in the march, but the Madrid authorities estimated the number of participants at 2,200.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Spain's José Manuel Albarez said in a newspaper interview published on Sunday that the summit's participants will also focus on the situation on Europe's southern flank in Africa, where he says Russia threatens Europe.

Foreign Affairs on June 29 will be the southern flank,” he told El Pais newspaper.
