About 9,000 troops from 20 NATO countries are taking part in military exercises in the Baltic Sea region, which have gained strategic importance following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Sweden has taken part in Baltops exercises before, but this year is participating for the first time as a full NATO member after joining the Alliance earlier this year, reports  Associated Press agency.

During the exercises, they practice trawling sea mines, detecting submarines, landing troops and the actions of doctors in a situation of mass casualties.

The purpose of the exercises – enhance interoperability of forces and underscore the allies' commitment to shared security, officials said.

Navy, air and ground forces exercises are being conducted in the Baltic Sea, Sweden and its strategic island of Gotland, as well as Lithuania, Poland and Germany.

About 50 ships, 45 aircraft and helicopters are involved in the exercise, which will last until Thursday.
