Thousands of Artists Write Latest Open Letter to AI Creators Over Unlicensed Use of Works

More than 10,500 actors, musicians, and authors have penned an open letter opposing the unlicensed use of their work to create artificial intelligence tools.

The Washington Post and the Associated Press are reporting on the news.

The letter is— The latest public petition from celebrities regarding AI tools that can create images, music and lyrics after being trained on vast amounts of human-created work.

“The unlicensed use of creative works to train generative AI is a massive, unfair threat to the livelihoods of the people behind those works and should not be allowed,” the petition says.

Signatories include Björn Ulvaeus of Swedish band ABBA, Robert Smith of the Cure and Thom Yorke and his bandmates from Radiohead. Also signing are writers including Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro, and actors Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon and Rosario Dawson.

OpenAI and other tech companies need text, images, videos and other materials to train the algorithms that power chatbots and other AI systems. The data is often collected online without consent or compensation.

The companies argue that the practice is protected as “fair use” under copyright law, but copyright owners and publishers increasingly disagree. Creative figures have already filed lawsuits in court and appeals to regulators.
