What happened

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings will send a robot inside a nuclear power plant « Fukushima-1», which will collect the remains of melted nuclear fuel and debris for analysis of radiation levels.

In 2011, this nuclear power plant suffered an accident due to an earthquake and tsunami, which caused the fuel to melt in three reactors, which led to a radiation leak. TEPCO reports that about 880 tons of molten nuclear fuel and debris remain inside these reactors, which complicates the process of removing them.

The robot is equipped with cameras, a flashlight and pincers, which allows you to cut off and collect pieces of molten material.

During the first mission, it should collect about 3 g of samples for analysis. Due to the high level of radiation, daily operations are limited to two hours, and workers are allowed to work near the reactor for no more than 15 minutes.

The robot will be controlled remotely by operators located in another station building. After the analysis of the collected samples, the data will be used to develop methods for dismantling, storing and disposing of the remains.
